Mobility Momentum: Optimizing the Mobile Workforce

The Compliance Dilemma

Parenting your new mobile workers.

“As long as you are living under my roof, you’ll follow my rules!”

Every parent at one time or another has found themselves uttering these famous words. But how do you know your rules are being followed – especially with teens that are about to venture out on their own for the first time? Employers dealing with a new mobile workforce face a similar challenge of compliance. Once the workers are away for hours or days at a time, it becomes increasingly difficult to keep them compliant with internal IT policies.

To enforce policies with increasingly mobile workers, employers are taking on the role of parent giving their employees different tools to report back on what they’ve been up to. While the rules may change based on company culture, goals, and the workforce, one thing stays the same – certainty of compliance is a must.

Like a parent with a teen, companies have many different ways to monitor whether the mobile one is following the rules. Which of the tools below is most similar to what you have in your IT toolkit?

10 family rules for teen drivers:

  • Be home by 10 pm
  • Make sure I know where you’re going
  • Only with friends who I know in the car
  • Always leave at least ½ tank of gas in the car

pen & paper:

lagtime

  • Note said was home by 10 pm
  • Went to the movies at the mall
  • Took Jay and Jim
  • Gas tank is ½ full

mobile phone:

teen time

  • Called at 10:15 pm saying would be a little late
  • Actually ended up going to the other movie theater
  • Jay couldn’t go, giving Jane and Jim a ride home
  • Gas tank is ½ full

in-car camera:

real-ity time

  • Parked outside Jane’s house at 10 pm
  • Got in a small accident at the mall, “parked” near the lake
  • Over 6 kids were in the car at once
  • Gas tank is ½ of regular gas, not premium
